Built in 1912, The Cutter Theatre was designed as The Metaline Falls School by famed architect Kirtland Cutter . The grand style was emblematic of the sweeping vision of town founder, Lewis Larsen - a symbol of the flourishing town’s industrial future. However, the extraction industries eventually ran out of natural resources and profitable markets, the population dwindled, and the remaining schools consolidated. The Metaline Falls school closed in 1972. The building served for a short time after as the newly formed Selkirk School District office. Then it remained empty, except for warehousing some relics of times past, and it was unheated for well-more than a decade, deteriorating year after year. The School District made plans to tear it down.
With the threat of demolition near, local citizens led by Eva Gayle Six rallied to purchase the building and restore it as a performing arts center. With grant funding, the entire theatre was designed and constructed by volunteers. Local citizens put in more than 14,000 volunteer hours in the first year of restoration. The Cutter Theatre officially opened in 1991 and has since brought a diverse array of performances to its stage including lectures, poetry readings, dancers, singers, bands, dramas, comedies, dinner theatre, and the occasional magician – along with special performances for the Selkirk Schools.
