Fall in Mason County tastes like oysters. When October arrives, crisp air settles over the South Puget Sound, the forests turn golden and the region’s celebrated shellfish take center stage at Shelton’s Sanderson Field. That is when OysterFest brings the community together for a weekend of food, music, family fun and one of the Olympic Peninsula’s most anticipated fall traditions.

OysterFest began in 1982 when a local businessman envisioned a fall celebration for Shelton that would complement the community’s spring Forest Festival. The Skookum Rotary Club embraced the idea, and what began as a modest local event quickly grew into one of the largest annual gatherings in Mason County.

For more than four decades, OysterFest has celebrated the bounty of the South Puget Sound while raising money for local organizations and community programs. Today, the festival draws thousands of visitors to Shelton and provides an opportunity to experience a distinctly Washington tradition.

Oysters naturally take center stage. The South Puget Sound and Hood Canal are renowned for shellfish, and October is an ideal time to enjoy the region's harvest.

At OysterFest, you'll find oysters prepared in a variety of ways alongside other Pacific Northwest favorites. Food vendors serve up seafood and other local specialties, while the festival's wine and beer offerings add to the celebration.

One of the weekend's biggest attractions is the West Coast Oyster Shucking Championship, where skilled shuckers compete for speed, accuracy and bragging rights. The competition is as entertaining to watch as it is impressive, offering a close-up look at a skill that has deep roots in Washington's shellfish industry.
