Getaway to Whistlin' Jack's Lodge and Outpost

Story and Photos by Brandon Fralic

“Jack’s is back”. That’s the new slogan at Whistlin’ Jack’s Outpost & Lodge in Naches, Washington — a historic, peaceful riverside property located between Mount Rainier and the Yakima Valley. Established in 1957, the lodge and outpost have provided rest and provisions for weary travelers for over 65 years. Jack’s hasn’t gone anywhere. But after undergoing an extensive renovation, it’s “back” alright.

Whistlin’ Jack’s is an outpost in the true sense of the word. There's not much else around for miles besides the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, Naches River, and State Route 410 — and that’s a very good thing. It’s the kind of place you go to escape the hustle and bustle, and families have been coming to Jack’s for generations.

For my first visit to Jack’s, I toured the property with Director of Operations Bailey Hempstead as my guide. She explained that Jack’s was purchased by new owners in 2019 and has since seen significant improvements. Bailey and her team have infused the historic lodge and outpost with new energy (and modern conveniences) while retaining its nostalgic feel — replacing roofs, floors, mattresses, hot tubs, and much more. These improvements make Jack’s more comfortable for guests without taking away from its historic (and storied) appeal.

Bailey says there’s “something for everyone” at Jack’s. Need to refuel before or after heading over Chinook Pass? Stop by the outpost, coffee shop, and 76 gas station for grab-and-go snacks and essentials. Looking for a place to spend the night? The lodge offers spacious, comfortable hotel rooms and cottages. RV and tent sites are available, too. Want to get married? Jack’s hosts weddings and events — from family reunions to conferences — utilizing the lodge’s riverside meadow, patio, and banquet room.

For the everyday traveler, Jack’s renovated lodging manages to achieve just the right balance of rustic charm and modern comfort. My riverfront room featured large windows overlooking the Naches River as the focal point (instead of a TV, which I didn’t miss). With nature front and center, I was able to focus on the purpose of my trip — getting away from the noise.

That’s not to say that Jack’s is totally off the grid, though. Complimentary wifi is available, and I was surprised to find wireless cell phone chargers on the desk and bedside stands. Hotel rooms have access to a serene, shared outdoor hot tub, and several cottages and bungalows offer private hot tubs. In other words: staying at Jack’s is far from “roughing it”.

At the center of Whistlin’ Jack’s is the main lodge, which contains the lobby, restaurant, bar, and gift shop. An original sign made from old growth hangs over the front desk, advertising modern cabins, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and beverages. The well-stocked gift shop sells guidebooks and products from local makers, along with fun Whistlin’ Jack’s swag like hoodies, hats, and koozies.

Step into the casual Riverside Restaurant for a meal any time of the day. You’ll find robust menus featuring everything from hearty breakfast (omelets, pancakes, eggs benedict) and lunch options (burgers, sandwiches, salads) to steak and seafood dinners. The Fireside Lounge — home to Jack’s original 1957 rock fireplace — retains a nostalgic roadhouse feel. Bailey tells me of regulars who’ve been coming here for years, hanging their wet snow gear to dry on hooks behind the roaring fireplace.

Jack's hosts regular events in the Fireside Lounge, including live music, karaoke, and comedy nights. The bar even has its own beer: Whistlin’ Yeti Hazy IPA. Made by Dru Bru with experimental Yakima hops, this special beer is available on tap at Jack’s Fireside Lounge. In addition to local draft beer, Jack’s serves house-made cocktails and offers a wine list with numerous Washington wines.

Whistlin’ Jack’s is a year-round destination. Though the Chinook Pass Scenic Byway closes seasonally (typically November - May), you can access the lodge from the east (Yakima) during winter months. Whether you visit for fall hiking, summer fishing, or winter sports, there’s absolutely something for everyone at Jack’s.

Hiking near Whistlin' Jack's

Whistlin’ Jack’s location near Chinook Pass makes it ideal for hiking and outdoor adventures. During my September visit, I took advantage of the late summer conditions and enjoyed a spectacular hike at the Naches Peak Loop trail. This family-friendly hike packs mountain meadows, alpine lakes, and Mount Rainier views into just 3.2 miles roundtrip. Following a section of the Pacific Crest Trail and passing by pretty Tipsoo Lake, it’s one of the best bang-for-your-buck loop hikes in the state. Hike it clockwise for excellent Rainier views.

Interested in spelunking? Stop by the Boulder Cave Trail — located just 2 miles from Jack’s — to explore a 330-foot basalt rock cave. Home to wintering bat populations, the cave is accessed via a 1.5-mile roundtrip trail. Boulder Cave Trail is open seasonally (mid-May through late September) and requires a reservation from recreation.gov to access.

Additional hiking opportunities abound at Mount Rainier National Park. Visit the Sunrise Visitor Center — at 6,400 feet, the park’s highest elevation accessible by car — for access to miles of alpine hiking trails between July and October.

In a world that often feels fast-paced and hectic, Whistlin' Jack’s Lodge offers a much-needed retreat to nature, history, and comfort. Whether you're drawn by the tranquility of the Naches River, the allure of the nearby mountains, or the welcoming charm of the lodge itself, Jack’s has something for everyone. From adventure seekers to those simply looking to relax, this newly renovated yet storied lodge provides the perfect balance of rustic charm and modern convenience. With its deep roots in the past and its eyes set on the future, Whistlin' Jack’s is more than back—it's better than ever.
